The Castillo de la Duquesa is an Estepona landmark that’s a great excursion for anyone visiting this charming part of Spain’s Costa del Sol.
This 18th-century castle and the unspoiled fishing village that surrounds it has a rich history that goes back to Roman times.
Whether you’re interested in history, or culture, or just want to enjoy a relaxing day on the coast, here’s everything you need to know about Castillo de la Duquesa, Estepona’s historic fortress.
The History of Castillo De La Duquesa
Castillo de la Duquesa is a remarkably well-preserved fortress that occupies an elevated position in the fishing village of Castillo de la Duquesa, on the outskirts of Estepona, Spain.
It was built in 1767 by Spanish general Francisco Paulino of Seville.
A Royal Charter and Troops
The Spanish King Carlos III (1716 – 1788) granted Francisco Paulino companies of cavalry and infantry to garrison at the castle.
The troops protect the surrounding coastline from frequent Barbary pirate attacks.
Castillo De La Duquesa’s impressive fortifications, powerful artillery, and strategic location made it an important stronghold during the 19th-century Peninsular War, and it remains one of the finest examples of 18th-century fortification in Spain.
Ongoing Occupation and Use of the Castle
Interestingly, the castle has been continuously occupied and renovated during its 250-year existence.
At some point, there was a moat and drawbridge, but they disappeared. Though the castle is not a military location, it houses municipal offices where trainee workshops are run.
Exploring Castillo De La Duquesa
You can enter and explore Castillo De La Duquesa despite it being in governmental use.
Part of the castle is the Manilva Archaeological Museum, which showcases the history of the region.
You can also look at exhibits in the various rooms and chambers, including a chapel, barracks, and watchtower.
Locals often go to Castillo de la Duquesa to take their wedding and first communion photos, set against a stunning backdrop of the Mediterranean Sea.

Take a quick look
By Road
If you’re driving, the easiest way to get to Castillo De La Duquesa is via the A-7 motorway.
Take exit 142 towards Manilva and then follow the signs to the castle. There is a large car park near the castle, so you shouldn’t have any trouble finding a space.
On Foot
If you’re staying in the nearby town of Sabinillas, you could walk to Castillo De La Duquesa.
It’s about a 30-minute walk along the beach promenade, which offers stunning views of the Mediterranean Sea.
Entry to the castle is free, but the castle does shut for the afternoon siesta.
In my opinion, the best time to visit Castillo de la Duquesa is during the spring or fall when the weather is mild and the crowds are smaller. During the summer months, the castle gets busy, and it is extremely hot, making it less enjoyable to explore.
