Is Jamaica Safe to Visit Right Now?

In November, crime rates in Jamaica skyrocketed to the point that the government declared it a crisis. The tourist hotspots of Kingston, Montego Bay, and other popular beach destinations are under an official state of emergency due to soaring levels of violence, theft, and kidnapping.

The governments of the United States, Canada, United Kingdom, Ireland, Australia, and beyond recommend exercising a high degree of caution or avoiding travel altogether due to the elevated levels of violence.

Travel Warning Issued For the Dominican Republic

Just as the Dominican Republic started breaking tourism records, the Caribbean island was added to the watch list of dangerous Caribbean destinations. Officials have recommended that travelers exercise a high degree of caution in major cities and tourist destinations across the island.

Humanitarian Crisis in Haiti

With record-breaking levels of violent crime and kidnappings, travel to all areas of Haiti should be avoided. Shortages of food and potable water, along with a cholera outbreak, have pushed the country to its breaking point.

The transnational criminal organizations trafficking weapons across the region have devasted the country and made gang violence part of daily life. The country now faces an extraordinary humanitarian crisis.

Level Two Travel Warning for The Bahamas

While The Balahams aren’t facing crime on the level of other Caribbean destinations, the United States and other nearby governments issued an advisory in late 2022. Tourist hotspots and local areas alike are being affected in by growing crime levels with the Nassau regions and Freeport seeing the biggest escalations.

Safest Destinations in the Caribbean

As tourists seek out the safest Caribbean islands, there are a few welcoming destinations where you can still relax without worry.

  • Aruba: Though neighboring Venezuela continues to struggle, this small island is a safe haven.
  • Turks and Caicos Islands: One of the safest countries in the Caribbean, the crime here is similar to what you would find in Miami or York.
  • Cayman Islands: The luxury resorts of this western Caribbean island have worked hard to maintain their safe spaces.
  • St. Lucia: While travellers are advised against going off the beaten path and walking alone, this country is still a safe destination.
  • The Virgin Islands: Both the United States and the British side of the islands continue to be secure destinations.
