There is never a wrong time to visit Cabo San Lucas.
The weather is warm and sunny year around. Therefore, the time you choose depends on preferences for activities and crowd levels.
That said, I prefer to visit Los Cabos anywhere from December to March. During this time, there is no risk of hurricanes, the temperatures are mild, and the days are sunny, making it the perfect place to escape the colder climate of the northern hemisphere.
However, kindly note that this is the peak season, and if you don’t like crowds, you are better off rescheduling your trip.
When Is The Best Time To Visit Cabo San Lucas?
I visited Cabo around mid-December, and I can attest that the city comes alive from late November to March.
During these winter months, Los Cabos is transformed into a magnificent paradise for travellers seeking a warm, sunny escape.
The temperatures here range from the mid-60s to the low 80s (Fahrenheit). As such, the temperatures are more comfortable and much milder than in the summer months.
The winter months also offer a wide array of beach activities. Since there is hardly any rainfall and most days are bright and sunny, enjoying all the typical beach activities such as swimming, jet skiing, snorkelling, and beachcombing is a must.
Moreover, Cabo San Lucas has some of the most fantastic winter attractions.
For instance, you can go on a hike and enjoy the views of the Sierra de la Laguna Mountains.
Winter is also the peak season to explore the waters of the Baja Peninsula, where sightings of dolphins, whales, and other marine life are frequent.
This is because most of these fish swim closer to Mexico’s coasts during winter in search of food.
All of this said, since winter is the high season, it does bring crowds, especially around New Year’s and Christmas.
Expect restaurants and hotels to increase their rates considerably more. As such, try to book accommodations in advance.
What Other Times You Can Visit Cabo San Lucas
While many people often choose to visit Cabo during the peak winter season, you can still explore the city any time of the year.
Whether you’re looking for cooler weather, smaller crowds, big savings, or just a different type of atmosphere, you can try visiting during the off-seasons.
Autumn
An autumn getaway would be ideal if you count yourself among those who appreciate music and film, enjoy exploring history and culture, and enjoy nature.
Los Cabos features a variety of concerts and musical acts throughout the autumn, including:
- Life Luxe Jazz Festival
- Los Cabos International Film Festival
- Los Cabos Open Jazz Festival
Fall in Los Cabos brings with it three unique festivals that offer an up-close experience of the city’s culture and history.
- The Day of the Dead
- Independence Day
- San José del Cabo Art Walk
During this season, ocean temperatures reach the mid-80s, making it the ideal time to explore under the dazzling surface of the Sea of Cortez and the Pacific Ocean.
Visitors who hit the ocean in the fall may:
- Snorkel
- Scuba dive
- Go Fishing
Spring
The nightlife in Cabo is always electrifying, regardless of the season.
But the nights come alive in spring with events, concerts, and private parties. The most popular events during spring are the traditional Cabo San Lucas Carnivals which offer a spectacular display of colors, music, and entertainment.
During this season, locals host a number of vibrant celebrations and festivals. You can witness traditional Mayan dances, local bands performing mariachi music, and vendors showcasing the region’s classic art.
Popular festivals to attend include Semana Santa and Fiesta de la Vendimia. There will also be plenty of sampling of local food and drinks from the area.
During the springtime, the city also offers remarkable fishing opportunities and best catches. Whether you want to go deep-sea, fly, or surf fishing, this is the place to be. The waters are teeming with Marlin, Sailfish, and other game fish, especially from late March to early June.
In March, the temperatures start to warm up and often average around 80 degrees Fahrenheit so if you’re hoping to spot whales, make sure you get there soon! As the weather continues to warm up, the whales will move north.
Summer
Summer months tend to be the hottest in Los Cabos. As such, a lot of people do not visit Cabo since the temperatures remain around 90 degrees Fahrenheit.
That said, there are still plenty of summer activities available. For instance, camel riding through the desert, scuba diving, deep-sea fishing, or snorkeling at Cabo Pulmo, sunset sail to El Arco, and ATV Tours.
There are also several events and festivals that you should not miss, such as:
- June: Los Cabos Open of Surf, Golf Tournament, Stars Stripes Fishing and Fiesta de la Música, Gala de Danza
- July: East Cape Dorado Shootout
- August: Festival del Mango Todos Santos and East Cape Bisbee Tournament
Final Thoughts
Overall, Los Cabos always has something to offer year-round. As a traveler, you can experience adventurous water activities and enjoy exploring this quaint little coastal town’s rich history and unique culture every season.
But before you book your trip, keep in mind what the best times to travel are depending on your preferences. Winter is usually the preferred time of year for many travelers, though it varies depending on personal inclinations and desired experiences.
